Congratulations to Alice Munro: Winner of the 2009 Man Booker International Prize

It was announced last night that Alice Munro is the winner of the 2009 Man Booker International Prize. The prize, which is awarded once every two years to a living author for a body of work that has contributed to an achievement in fiction on the world stage, will be presented to Munro at a ceremony at Trinity College in Dublin on June 25. Munro will receive a trophy and a check for £60,000.

Alice Munro has been the recipient of many awards and prizes throughout her career, including the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Lannan Literary Award and the Edward MacDowell Medal in literature. She has published eleven new collections of stories, including Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You; The Love of a Good Woman; Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage; Runaway; and a volume of Selected Stories—as well as a novel, Lives of Girls and Women. Munro’s latest collection of short stories, Too Much Happiness, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf this November.
